Denotation & Connotation:
Denotation: There is a young boy in the background with some text saying 'Dig toilets, Not graves'. The background appears to be some trees and a village possibly.
Connotation: The advert is made by Water Aid, using the slogan 'Dig water, Not graves'. The connotations of the slogan shows how people like this young boy are suffering leading to deaths. The slogan also tells us how unclean water is also leading to deaths. The facial expressions of the boy emphasises how it affects people like him. We can also see how the child is wearing tattered clothing showing how the boy and people like him don't receive the same care as people who may not live in poverty. In addition, the background is blurred with not much life in it meaning it has connotations of how it isn't a very happy topic but rather something which should be changed.
Analysis: This advert helps the audience understand the situation the boy is in, helps the people reflect upon it. In addition, the font used in the left corner of the advert attracts the audience in reading it, understanding the aim of the advert. The advert also aims to more wealthier people to receive donations to help those people who live in poverty. The slogan adds a negative feeling to the advert suggesting the values of the advert.
Denotation: In this advert below, we can see a child with his mouth covered, colours of the Palestine flag. In addition, there is large text with words of 'Stop War', 'Save Palestine' and finally ' If we don't end the war, the war will end us'.
Connotation: In the image seen above, there is a slogan ' If we don't end the war, the war will end us'. This has connotations of harsh environments and how the war is constant causing pain to society. The young boy in the background, has his mouth covered demonstrating how Palestine isn't being heard and is made quiet by people around him. The public hasn't let them speak up but silenced. The colour red has the connotations of death, blood which shows the negative impact against the war and the increase of problems. Deaths increased after two constant years of genocide with many areas wiped out and many pictures seen with pain, struggles and blood which leave people in shock. Moreover, emphasis is added by showing how the boy is crying with tears running down his cheek. Therefore this shows the pain all the Palestinian civilians are going through and no work is done to prevent it. This image illustrates only one problem while many other situations are being created.
Analysis: This advert helps the audience understand the situation the boy is in and many other Palestinians. It allows people reflect upon this even though many agree with the ongoing war seeing bombs and deaths daily and supporting them. In addition, the biggest piece of text is 'STOP WAR' which is the main aim of the advert and get the message across to all viewers to understand. This also aims to people with higher status who are able to help stop the war and help all Palestinians.
