Audience Effects Theory
Audience Effects Theory:
1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
It is when everyone takes in the same views having the same effect on everyone. The message is taken in passively.
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
Active audience is the more modern view and people have their own interactions regarding the information they take in.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
It is the theory that consumers are always passive as if the producers are having the information injected into their minds. It assumes that everyone has the same views.
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification.
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: BBC News Why: This provides information about the world around us or politics. It has reliable information.
PERSONAL IDENTITY: Gilmore Girls Why: Its a girl who attends school visiting her parents which is something I relate to.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Friends Why: This is because it is a fun drama series which can be watched to take your mind off the world around you and is something you may not experience.
RELATIONSHIPS: Hailey Bieber Why: She has a makeup brand and makeup is something I enjoy.
5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications
The clip from Blue Planet explores sea animals. The gratifications and use theory is used in this video. It offers information/surveillance. It contains information about animals in the sea and learning information you may not already know. Some people may have a personal identity with it and relate while some may watch it as a way to escape their daily and social lives. Having relationships with this could mean the enjoyment of understanding more about what they like which in this case is animals and the detailed understanding of it.
