Year 11 - Paper 1 Baseline Assessment Learner Response
Year 11 - Paper 1 Baseline Assessment Learner Response:
1) Feedback: a) 22/42, Grade 5 b) Q2) Focus on the representations and stereotypes of older people rather than the actual image that Specsavers has made.
2)
- The representation of older people is very positive because they are smiling and generally look very happy.
- Character seems healthy so perhaps it is challenging stereotypical representations of older people being unhealthy or frail, makes being older seem something positive and enjoyable.
- Clothes look quite expensive, neat and new, suggesting a certain degree of wealth and success
3)
- Audrey presented as a princess and car driver as the hero which creates a Romeo and Juliet romantic effect/ narrative.
- Bus driver as donor – he unwillingly donates Audrey his cap, which she then uses to subvert the role of the car driver.
- Car driver as (false) hero – he arrives to save the day (apparent hero ) but is demoted to chauffeur so becomes a helper
4)
- He (and his car) represent stereotypes of class sophistication, in contrast to the bus/bus driver’s everyday practicality – a sporty car is very much used as a stereotype of wealth/success which the advertisement suggests are as desirable as the bar of Galaxy,
- She is also stereotypically ‘upper class's in terms of looks, outfit and demeanour, which idealises her as an aspirational figure (again, inviting the audience to admire and emulate, the typical approach of advertisements). However, this could also be regarded as a negative stereotype, since it seems to conflate wealth/class with levels of attractiveness (with links to male gaze/female objectification).
5)
- Music videos thus often blend elements from various cultures, demonstrating how globalised music trends influence local styles. To be successful, music videos need to have global appeal.
- The success of platforms like YouTube has allowed artists from a range of backgrounds to reach international audiences, promoting a globalised music culture; this is often reflected in the content of videos which adopt diverse cultural references.
- Western pop music, particularly from the UK and US, often dominates global charts, exemplifying cultural imperialism through the widespread influence of Western music videos which subsequently influence domestic artists; the US is particularly dominant.
6)
- The main source of income for commercial radio stations comes from selling advertising slots, which can include local, regional and national advertisements.
- Stations often build partnerships with businesses to sponsor specific shows or segments, providing financial support in exchange for promotional opportunities.
- Commercial stations may run contests and promotions funded by businesses, offering prizes in exchange for advertising exposure.
7)
- Learn all the theories required for media to link to the questions.
- Practice past paper questions which can help me answer questions in actual exam.
